Million Reasons by Lady Gaga

Million Reasons by Lady Gaga
.

Representations? Stereotypes?
There is the stereotype of the typical female because it shows her getting pampered with make up and her whole outfit is pink however the fact she is wearing a suit juxtaposes the pink. It also has the stereotypical country vibe to it because she has a cowboy hat on it and is using a guitar. She also has the stereotype of a pop star because she is having everything done for her and there are always people there for her.
Narrative?
The narrative of this music video is of her wanting to leave her other half yet she cannot because she is always in hope that he will change even when he is giving her a 'million reasons' to leave.
Lady Gaga's star image?
Her star image is usually very put on and is a construction as she usually wears funky and wacky clothes, also she has a stage name so it is very unlike her. However in this video she is quite natural

Lady Gaga Background
  • Real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta
  • Inspiration is from various artists like Madonna, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Freddie Mercury as well as art from Andy Warhol. She also started in music theatre
  • Most known for her outrageous style and the album 'Joanne' is a complete contrast to her previous image as it is very 'stripped back' and natural.
Lyric Analysis:
  • Song opens with a more somber tone which is already a big contrast as the song hasn't even started and its quite a sad tune showing she is not happy already
  • 'A million reasons' repetition is showing she is constantly questioning the strength of the relationship and there is so many reasons why to stop persueing it. However the repetition shows that she does not want to go because she keeps rendering on the idea that he will get better.
  • 'but baby I just need one good one to stay' shows she is constantly trying to make things better and doesn't want to leave but she needs at least something to show he still cares about the relationship.
  • 'Cant you give me what I'm needin' shows that he isn't even giving her the bare minimum that she needs to carry on and is not asking for much
  • 'I try to make the worst seem better, lord I pray show me the way' adds a religious sense to it and shows she is trying to make the worst situation into a positive rather than blowing over the whole situation
  • 'To cut through all his worn out leather' may represent Gaga’s own scars from these strained relationships that keep her from forming new, healthier bonds. Gaga wants the Lord to guide her on her desire to “cut through” all of her trials and tribulations in order to leave the past behind and move on from it. Another representation this could be is that the leather could suggest the old her and as this album is so new and fresh she wants to cut through and start a new fresh image to her work.
  • 'Giving me a million reasons to quit the show' shows that she is blaming her work for the wellbeing of the relationship, showing she will be flexible in the relationship but he wont
Meaning of song
The song is about Lady Gaga's ex fiancé Taylor Kinney and the breakdown of there relationship. In the documentary 'Five-feet-two' on Netflix she explains that during every major milestone in her life her relationships have always failed.
